Object note

This page stays close to the sheet itself: composition, historical setting, and the work's place in the archive.

Autumn as density and maturity

Here the series grows heavier and more saturated. Fruit, foliage, and color temperature produce a sense of accumulation rather than bloom or ease.

A change in weight

What changes from panel to panel is not simply seasonal attribute but compositional pressure. Autumn adds weight to the figure and to the surrounding ornament, tightening the rhythm of the cycle before winter.

Place in the archive

Autumn shows Mucha’s ability to control a sequence through modulation. He does not abandon elegance, but he thickens it, making ornament feel seasonally charged.
